Responsibilities of Georgia Tech Work Abroad Employers
An employer participating in the Georgia Tech Division of Professional Practice Work Abroad Program is asked to:- Provide a mutually beneficial internship description and training related to the student’s field of study and aligned with the company’s mission
- Complete a student performance evaluation
- Provide compensation that covers the cost of living in the student’s work location, and assist with housing and/or provide housing recommendations
- Assist with the student’s visa/work permit
Compensation
The Georgia Tech Division of Professional Practice recommends that all internships be paid positions. Payment should cover the cost of living for the student and be equal to what a domestic intern would be paid in the employer’s country. There are creative ways to offer payment to interns as well. For example, if the company has housing available, the company could provide a stipend to the student along with free housing.
If you are unsure of payment arrangements for interns, please contact our office to discuss the possibilities.
Visas/Work PermitsIf an intern needs to obtain a visa or work permit to work in the employer’s country, the Division of Professional Practice asks for the host employer’s help in obtaining the necessary documentation to obtain the work permit/visa. Usually, this consists of a letter from the company confirming the student’s offer of employment. The requirement, however, can vary by country. Our staff is here to work with employers in obtaining the necessary documentation to ensure the students’ work positions overseas.
